The kaleidoscopic display of fall foliage on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.) rivals anything found in New England. Coupled with this route’s rolling terrain and moderate daily mileages, this is a superb choice for your first self-contained bike-travel experience.
After pedaling from Petoskey to the top of the Lower Peninsula, we’ll take advantage of the Mackinac Bridge Authority’s shuttle service to transport us across this world-famous bridge. Then we’ll proceed north, toward Whitefish Bay, site of a 1975 shipwreck memorialized a year later in Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” At Sault Ste. Marie, we’ll visit the Soo Locks, where watercraft are raised or lowered to permit passage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. We’ll next catch a ferry to Mackinac Island and spend most of a day exploring this special place where automobiles are noticeably absent.
The car may be king in nearby Detroit and other points south, but in the U.P., the bicycle reigns supreme. Why not join us for this special autumn bike touring experience?
