This spring you won’t need to worry about traffic as you ride your hybrid or mountain bike some 330 miles on hard-packed, gently-graded gravel and dirt trails from the heart of the nation’s capital to just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal served as a lifeline for early settlers. Today, its associated towpath serves as a route to an unforgettable bicycle travel experience.
We’ll begin with a visit to the National Mall, home to many of our nation’s most cherished monuments and memorials. After bidding adieu to DC, we’ll head through stylish Georgetown and then plunge deep into rural Maryland. We’ll visit Antietam National Battlefield and Fort Fredrick, a restored, 1756 British outpost. In lively Cumberland, Maryland, we’ll link up with the Great Allegheny Passage, another fantastic rail-trail, completed in 2006. After reaching the outskirts of Pittsburgh, we’ll catch a shuttle back to Washington. Sign up soon — this tour is always among our most popular, usually filling to capacity in just a few weeks’ time.
