Upon signing up for a tour, you will receive confirmation and preparatory materials, including a Before You Go booklet that contains a packing list and training tips. About 60 days prior to your trip, you will receive a Tour Information Packet with specific details about your starting location, a participant roster, official bike shop, travel tips, and much more.
With an eye towards maintaining the spirit of Adventure Cycling's origins, you will camp and cook with your riding companions on self-contained trips. Price includes:
- All meals. Your group shares food purchase and preparation responsibilities on a rotating basis.
- Overnight camping fees, including beginning and ending overnight facilities (Exception: TransAm and Southern Tier include 10 nights of motel lodging.)
- Leader and leader materials.
- Maps (where applicable), T-shirt, and a safety triangle.
- Use of group cooking equipment, tool kit, and first-aid supplies.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. Food purchase, preparation, and clean-up are shared by group members on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be addressed, though food selection may be limited in some locations. Food and group cooking equipment are separated into equal portions to be carried by group members. Each participant must set aside a portion of cargo space for this purpose, approximately ΒΌ of his or her total carrying capacity.
Overnights: Most of the overnights are at state parks, national forest campgrounds, private campgrounds, school fields, or city facilities, with some primitive camping on backcountry trips such as the Great Divide. Amenities range from RV parks boasting hot tubs to wilderness locations with no running water, depending on the nature and location of the trip. Indoor facilities such as hostels and churches are occasionally used. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated for below-freezing temperatures, and a sleeping pad.
