ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION STANDS STRONG THROUGH STORMY 2009
November 12, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association — North America’s largest membership cycling organization — today reported strong income numbers for FY09 (ending September 30) with overall growth in its membership, sales, development, and tours programs. Surprisingly, in a year where many tour companies suffered, the big star for Adventure Cycling was its guided cycling tours. Total tours participants were up 9% over FY08, with total tours revenue increasing 23%. The Association offers more than 40 cycling tours each year, including supported trips, self-contained tours, and educational trips such as its unique Intro to Road Touring course. More.

ADVENTURE CYCLING HONORS 2009 BICYCLE TRAVEL AWARD WINNERS

ADVENTURE CYCLING CARTOGRAPHER ELECTED TO NACIS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SRAM CYCLING FUND AND FOUNDATIONS SUPPORT U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM

BRONX LAB STUDENTS SPIN THROUGH HISTORY ON UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BICYCLE ROUTE
July 16, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — This summer, eight Bronx Lab students will cycle a 280-mile stretch of the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route in Ohio. The Bronx Lab Underground Railroad Riders are part of the school’s unique, real-world-as-classroom initiative, “Health and History: Biking the Underground Railroad,” aimed at marrying healthy living habits with learning history. LANDMARK "BLISS BICYCLE" FROM BIKECENTENNIAL ENSHRINED AT ADVENTURE CYCLING
July 8, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association today announced the installation of a unique “triple tandem” bicycle that was used by a dad and his two young daughters to pedal more than 4,200 miles in 1976 in honor of the nation’s Bicentennial. Bill Bliss of San Jose, California, custom-built the three-seater for himself and his daughters, 8 year-old Shannon and 7 year-old Heather, and together they rode it on Adventure Cycling’s TransAmerica Trail along with more than 4,100 riders as part of Bikecentennial ’76. REI AWARDS $10,000 IN SUPPORT OF NEW SIERRA CASCADES ROUTE
June 24, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association was recently presented with a $10,000 check from Recreational Equipment, Inc (REI) at Adventure Cycling’s headquarters at 150 E. Pine Street in Missoula, Montana. The REI funds will support on-going mapping and production work for the Association’s newest route — the Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route. A 2,400-mile road-based journey, the route will stretch from Sumas, Washington, at the Canadian-Washington State border, through the Cascade Range into Oregon, southward through the Sierra Nevada Range in California and Nevada, to the Tehachapi and San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California, ending in Tecate, California, at the Mexican border. To date, REI has provided $30,000 in support of the Sierra Cascades Route. More.

ADVENTURE CYCLING EMBRACES GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY
April 13, 2009, Missoula, Mont.  Adventure Cycling Association today announced that its world-renowned cycling maps will now be produced using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Kevin McManigal, Adventure Cycling’s GIS specialist, and cartographer Casey Greene recently completed the conversion of one map section of the Association’s Great Parks South Bicycle Route from a strictly illustration software-based format to a GIS and illustration software-based map. It is the first map in Adventure Cycling’s Route Network to receive this treatment, which adds new features such as shaded relief, and a revised north arrow and scale bar. More.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BICYCLE ROUTE WINS AMERICAN TRAILS PARTNERSHIP AWARD
November 18, 2008, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association’s nationally acclaimed Underground Railroad Bicycle Route has won the American Trails National Partnership Award. Announced last night at the 19th National Trails Symposium in Little Rock, Arkansas, this award recognizes the unique partnership forged between Adventure Cycling Association and the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health to create a 2,028-mile bicycle route memorializing the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses by which freedom seekers attempted to escape slavery before and during the Civil War. The Underground Railroad Bicycle Route passes points of interest and historic sites from Mobile, Alabama, a busy port for slavery during the pre-civil war era, north to Owen Sound, Ontario, a town founded by free blacks in 1857.  More.

ADVENTURE CYCLIST DEPUTY EDITOR SNAPS UP GOLD
November 3, 2008, Missoula, Mont. — Aaron Teasdale, Adventure Cyclist’s own deputy editor, clinched gold in the recent 24th Annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition for his May 2007 Adventure Cyclist story “Across Maasai Land.” Honored in the competition’s Article in Adventure Travel category, the judges praised his “elegant account of a bicycle trek across Tanzania, where giraffes, lions and zebras roam the Serengeti Plain and blue monkeys skip across the tops of lush forests.” Adding, “His fascination with the native Maasai matches his appreciation for the flora and fauna, and the practical information he provides proves that this fantasy trip is possible.” Teasdale’s was one of 1,356 entries in 27 categories. NEW PLAN FOR OFFICIAL U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM APPROVED
October 28, 2008, Missoula, Mont. — The United States is on a path to creating what could become the largest official bicycle route network in the world, thanks to the approval of a new plan by America’s leading authority on national route designations. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has just approved a National Corridor Plan laying out the framework and guidelines for the development of this system.   More.

NEW PLAN FOR NATION-SPANNING U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM UNVEILED AT INTERBIKE
September 12, 2008, Missoula, Mont. —  Adventure Cycling Association will showcase an emerging plan for a nationwide U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) at the upcoming Interbike Conference, September 24-26, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The USBRS project is a multi-organizational effort lead by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) with the support of Adventure Cycling. WORLD'S LONGEST MOUNTAIN BIKE ROUTE CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
May 28, 2008, Missoula, Mont.— Adventure Cycling Association  and Dirt Rag magazine invite dirt lovers everywhere to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR). The longest mountain bike route on the planet, the GDMBR traces the spine of the Rocky Mountains for a whopping 2,711 miles in its entirety, following primarily dirt roads and tracks from Banff, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, at the Mexican border. Sound hardcore? It is, but there are lots of ways to be involved with the anniversary, whether your friends call you super dirt or you’re still on training wheels. More.
