GET KIDS PSYCHED ON BIKES
March 19, 2008, Missoula, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association announces a fantastic new educational offering, the Pedal Pioneers Training Course (PPTC). Designed to get kids off the couch and onto a bicycle saddle, this is a leadership course for adults who want to take groups of kids on overnight bicycle adventures. The PPTC distills Adventure Cycling’s decades’ worth of experience in organizing and leading bicycle tours, and wraps it into a three-day package that will impart a wealth of knowledge and know-how on and off the bike. BIKE INDUSTRY SUPPLIES CRUCIAL GRANT SUPPORT FOR NEW NATIONAL BIKE ROUTE TRACKING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
May 31, 2005, MISSOULA, Mont. -- The Adventure Cycling Association today announced that they have been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Bikes Belong Coalition to develop an innovative bike route tracing the historic Underground Railroad, the pathway to freedom for thousands of African Americans. Bikes Belong is a non-profit national coalition of bicycle suppliers and retailers working together to put more people on bicycles more often. More.

ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR 2005 TRAIL ANGEL AWARD
May 2, 2005, MISSOULA, Mont. --Adventure Cycling Association is currently seeking nominations for the 2005 June Curry Trail Angel Award. The phrase Trail Angel refers to a generous individual or group encountered during a bicycle tour that makes the cyclotourst’s journey easier, or in some cases even possible, by helping the cyclist as a form of goodwill. Any individual or group that went out of their way to do something special for a cyclotourist, even if it was a one-time occurrence, is eligible for nomination. More.

"COOKIE LADY" HOSPITALIZED
March 1, 2005, MISSOULA, Montana-Adventure Cycling Association, June Curry, the famous "Cookie Lady"; from Afton, Virginia, had a stroke on February 20, but is making very good progress. She has gone from being paralyzed on the left side to getting full use of her left arm and some use of her left leg. She is able to walk with help and a walker. More.

BIKE GIVEAWAY 2004 WINNER ANNOUNCED
January 26, 2005, MISSOULA, Mont. -- James Derflinger from rural Lancaster, Ohio is the big winner in the Adventure Cycling Association's Bike Giveaway 2004. A five-year Adventure Cycling Association member, Jim will receive a handmade Independnce touring bike from Independent Fabrication, racks for his bike from Old Man Mountain, and a spot on one of the association's seven-day Event tours in 2005. Jim Derflinger's name was pulled from the over 41,000 current and new members of the Adventure Cycling Association who were automatically entered into Bike Giveaway 2004. "Amazingly," Jim said, "the night before I learned I'd won, I was looking for a new bike on the internet." More.

REI DONATES $20,000 TO ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION
November 18, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) announced the recipients of the annual REI Stewards for the Environment awards. Making the list of outstanding environmental volunteers is Roy Weil and Mary Shaw of Pittsburgh, PA, who are members of Missoula-based Adventure Cycling Association. Weil and Shaw will be awarded with a $500 REI gift card, and a $20,000 check will be presented to the Adventure Cycling Association at a awards ceremony scheduled along with the Adventure Cycling Association Open House on November 18th at 3:45pm at the association's headquarters at 150 E. ADVENTURE CYCLING KICKS OFF HOLIDAY SEASON WITH OPEN HOUSE
October 28, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association, the nation's premier bicycle touring organization, will welcome its friends and neighbors to an open house at its Missoula headquarters from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 18.

Communications director, Susan Waters, says the purpose of the gathering is at least threefold: "This is an event to celebrate the arrival of Jim Sayer, our new executive director, who comes to Missoula from the Sierra Business Council. But we're also hosting it in order to introduce the rest of our staff and simply to open our doors to the community and give everyone the opportunity to see what we do." More.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NAMED
September 28, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association, the nation's premier bicycle touring organization and the largest recreational cycling membership organization in the U.S., has announced that Jim Sayer of Truckee, CA has been hired as executive director. Sayer is just the fifth individual to hold the post in the organization's 30-year history.

COUPLE WIN TRAIL ANGEL AWARD
September 27, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association has chosen Dave and Jo-An Martin of Dubois, Wyoming, as the recipients of its second annual June Curry Trail Angel Award. This award recognizes the contributions made by individuals and organizations in America who promote bicycle touring and improve conditions for cyclotourists. The phrase "trail angel" refers to the Good Samaritans encountered on a long-distance bicycle tour who make the cyclist's journey easier, or in some cases, even possible. More.

BRAXTONS TO RECEIVE FIRST ANNUAL "BRAXTON BIKE SHOP AWARD"
August 1, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association, the nation's premier bicycle touring organization, has announced that Shirley Elin Braxton of Missoula will be awarded the 2004 Braxton Bike Shop Award. Braxton is slated to receive a framed certificate honoring her, her late husband Sam, and their long-running bicycle business in a July 24 ceremony held at Big Sky High School during the kick-off barbeque for the Cycle Montana event tour. NEW ROUTES IN WASHINGTON, D.C., AREA AND CANADIAN ROCKIES
May 10, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association, the nation's premier bike-touring organization, has unveiled two new routes in 2004. The Tidewater Potomac Heritage Bicycle Route and the Great Divide Canada Mountain Bike Route add 626 miles to the association's National Bicycle Route Network, now totaling 32,361 miles. More.

GREAT DIVIDE ROUTE MAPS UPDATED
March 19, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- Adventure Cycling Association, the nation's largest recreational cycling association, has updated the six map sections of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. Believed to be the longest off-pavement bike route in the world, the 2,490-mile Great Divide Route runs from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, mostly within 50 miles of the Continental Divide. The updated map sections have been reprinted and are now available for purchase. More.

ADVENTURE CYCLING WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Feb. 19, 2004, MISSOULA, Mont. -- At its meeting in late January, Adventure Cycling Association's board of directors officially welcomed two new members and one reelected member to the eight-person board. New members of the board are Jeff Miller, 34, of Augusta, Maine, and Anna Ginn, 53, of New York City. The reelected member is Charlie Pace, 72, of Columbus, Ohio. More.
