Adventure Cycling Cartographer Elected to NACIS Board of Directors
Jennifer Milyko joins national board serving North American cartographic community
Missoula, Montana — Adventure Cycling Association cartographer Jennifer Milyko was recently elected to the North American Cartographic Information Society's (NACIS) board of directors during the Society's annual meeting in Sacramento, California.
"As one of the conference hosts in 2008, it's been clear that Jenn is very committed to the cartographic community," said Lou Cross, NACIS' executive director, "NACIS is grateful for Jenn's enthusiastic involvement with our organization and her upcoming service on our board."
Milyko added, "I have always had positive experiences in my interactions with NACIS and its members. I believe it to be one of the most accessible professional groups around. I look forward to learning more about what happens behind the scenes, and how I can support the organization from within to achieve its goals." Milyko is a ten-year veteran of Adventure Cycling's routes and mapping department.
Milyko will serve a two-year term on the NACIS board, and also work with its Awards Committee, which awards grants to student and general members to facilitate their travel to the annual NACIS conference. This event gathers mapmakers, map users, map librarians, and map enthusiasts to share research, recent projects, and expertise from around the nation, the continent, and the world.
NACIS' objectives are to improve communication, coordination and cooperation among the producers, disseminators, curators, and users of cartographic information; to support and coordinate activities with other professional organizations and institutions involved with cartographic information; to improve the use of cartographic materials through education and to promote "graphicacy"; to promote and coordinate the acquisition, preservation, and automated retrieval of all types of cartographic material; and to influence government policy on cartographic information.
NACIS will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2010.
