The 2010 Annual Member Survey is now open. Please take a few minutes to give us your feedback.
In March 2009, we conducted our 2nd Annual Member Survey. A whopping 28% of our members responded and contributed their thoughts on how we were doing and what we should be working on in the future. Here is what they told us:
What do our members think about Adventure Cycling?
- 93% of our members would recommend Adventure Cycling to a friend. If you'd like to do this, check out our Share The Joy program.
- Our mission (inspiring people of all ages to travel by bicycle) is the primary reason that respondents are members (82%) with Adventure Cyclist magazine a close second at 79%.
- 92% of our members are aware of our work on the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS).
- Here are the top five features our members would like to see as part of the USBRS:
- Route maps
- Roads with shoulders
- Low traffic roads
- Bike route signs
- a) Scenic roads & b) Interesting destinations
- 85% of respondents rated Adventure Cyclist magazine as Above Average or higher. Share a free sample issue with a cycling friend.
- 84% of respondents think an Adventure Cycling membership is a good value.
- 73% of respondents would like to see a members-only section on the website.
How and where do our members ride?
- Road biking is the most popular type of riding with our members at 93%. 60% commute by bike.
- Almost 45% of our members belong to their local bike club.
- 99% of Adventure Cycling members ride on paved roads with paved bike paths coming in second at 82%
- The current economic situation has yet to have a significant impact on the plans that our members have made for bike vacations. 63% had planned to take a bike vacation and will still go and only 4% had planned to go, but won’t. Another 12% will just vacation closer to home.
What do our members have to say?
- I completed a solo, self-supported cross-country tour in the fall, using UGRR [Underground Railroad], GRS [Great Rivers], and ST [Southern Tier] (along with the C&O Canal, GAP, and some roads & trails between Pittsburgh and Columbus, OH, and some of the PCH [Pacific Coast Highway] in California). My prior cycle-touring experience was limited, but my epic journey was both easy to plan and highly successful because of the your maps and resources I found online through your website. THANK YOU!!!
- My membership in your organization has been the spark that spurred me on, to do things on a bike I could never have imagined. I read your magazine every month, not because I think I'll ever bike in Thailand or Venezuela, but because it makes me feel good to know that SOMEONE is doing it. I will do rides that I would not ordinarily do because of your inspired examples; I will go places I would not ordinarily go because someone from your organization is sponsoring a ride there. Keep up the good work!
- Thank you for doing what you do. It's great to have an organization, and be part of one, that promotes cycling in such a tangible way. I joined to get your magazine and support a group of people working to build a national network of trails. Now, please, if you could, pick me to win the Surly Long Haul Trucker! :)
- I love Adventure Cyclist magazine, and have given several gift subscriptions to friends. I especially like the articles about people who have the time/money/courage to go all over the world on bikes. Keeps me psyched for my closer to home tours, and has already inspired me to venture to Spain for a week long self guided tour, something I never would have tried without your magazine, and one of my favorite all time vacations.
- I did a cross country trip last year and your maps were the MOST VALUABLE tool. I loved how I was able to piece together -5 different routes to make the most amazing northern tier crossing. Thank you so much for making a trip of a life time so easy and special. I've recommended your map routes to MANY people :-)
- I think Adventure Cycling is an excellent advocacy organization for cycling of all types. I love the magazine. While I have not taken advantage of many of the services the organization offers I have aspirations of doing some bike touring and Adventure Cycling would be the 1st place I would go to for ideas, advice, maps and other info. I definitely like getting info on-line so in the interest of saving paper and mailing costs the more info you can provide by that method the better EXCEPT the magazine which I like to get in print. Keep up the great work.
- I haven't actually toured yet, but rely on your mag & Bike Bits to keep me motivated to plan a tour. I consider myself an "adventure cyclist" because I've planned all sorts of crazy mtn bike weekends and vacations over the years, so I love your articles on off-road touring.
- Your maps got me into your organization and still are a major attraction for me as they have allowed me to venture on self supported trips I otherwise might not have attempted, although I have enjoyed two of your organized tours.
- You guys are awesome. I love the magazine...gives me a mental vacation and motivation to ride and plan a trip! I appreciate the advocacy of the organization and the balance of articles in the magazine...such a good fit for me.
- I had moved and forgotten to inform AC. Your subscription folks were prompt and gracious sending out the issues I had missed. Great organization, fun to be a member, great magazine, I've enjoyed watching it grow.
- I got laid off, so I'm dropping out of the economy for a couple of months to do the Southern Tier using your maps with some folks I contacted through your classified ads. Thanks a whole lot!
The 2010 Annual Survey will open on February 1st, so mark your calendar and come back to share your thoughts.
