The start of the 2009 Tour Divide race kicks off in unorthodox fashion at 10:00 a.m from the Spray River Trailhead in Banff National Park. Things “officially” began when, asked by this photographer if he was calling the start, Matthew Lee cried out “Congratulations guys!” and sped down the trail. The rest of the riders stood bemused for a moment — looking around at each with nervous smiles that said “Did he just start the race?” — before they all put foot to pedal and followed Matthew down the trail.
